Following the success of the Community Buyback events, GRIPE  provided fund for  the setting up of Permanent Buyback Centre for Gamashie in Jamestown. The   Buyback center is a waste recovery center where people can take their used plastics and cans in exchange for incentives such as cash or food items. The Gamashie Community Buyback Centre as it is called is expected to

  • To ensure that plastic which would have normally ended up in the environment or landfill is instead recovered and diverted into the recycling value chain and recycled, reused or put into valuable end-uses.
  • provide residents with the opportunity to gain cash in exchange for their used plastics engraining the fact that it is a resource and not waste
  • Provide employment opportunities for people in the Community
