Background

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection and raise awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations. First held on 22nd April 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by earthday.org (formerly Earth Day Network) including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. The mission of Earth Day is founded on the premise that all people, regardless of race, gender, income, or geography, have a moral right to a healthy, sustainable environment.

The official theme for 2023 is “Invest In Our Planet” acting as a continuation of last year’s well-received campaign. The theme is designed to persuade businesses, governments and citizens everywhere on the need to invest in our planet to improve our environment and give our descendants a better and safer future. Again, it contributes to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12 and 17.

A plastic bottle can take approximately 450 years to break down when disposed inappropriately. Instead of throwing your used plastics into the garbage, post-consumer plastics can be turned into awesome items that can be used over and over again. The plastic recycling challenge invites children between ages 9 – 14 years only to think up and create unique artworks/items from post-consumer plastics (mainly; PET, LDPE, HDPE and plastic laminates). We hope that through this contest, our children can shine more light on plastic recycling and help create solutions to solve the problems associated with littered plastics. Additionally, children who participate will use the opportunity given them to tell the rest of Ghana, the motivation behind their artworks and by so doing, contribute to raising awareness on plastic waste and appreciating the importance of reusing and recycling in securing a better future for all life on Earth.
